Psalm 51 part 1

Psalm 51 part 1

Summer in the Psalms – Psalm 51

#1 THE BACKSTORY TO PSALM 51

Nathan replied to the king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you.” 2 Samuel 7:3 (NIV)

After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord. 2 Samuel 11:27 (NIV)

Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. 2 Samuel 12:13 (NIV)

#2 SOME CLARITY ABOUT SIN

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.  Romans 3:23 (NLT)

And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else.Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.  James 1:13-15 (NLT)

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 1 John 1:8-10 (NLT)

#3 A BEAUTIFUL PICTURE OF REPENTANCE

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1-2 (NIV)
